Baltimore has reached the Fourth of July weekend, which means heat, fireworks, waterfront crowds, and people pretending humidity is a personality test. Baltimore History
Baltimore has its own Washington Monument, because of course it does, and it got there first.
The Mount Vernon monument was begun in 1815 and completed in 1829, designed by Robert Mills, who later designed the more famous one in Washington, D.C. Baltimoreās version stands 178 feet tall, which is tall enough to be impressive and short enough not to behave like federal architecture with a gland problem. (Explore Baltimore Heritage)
It sits in Mount Vernon like a marble exclamation point. The city built it before the country had fully decided how it wanted to look at itself in stone, which feels very Baltimore, show up early, make the thing, let everybody else argue later.

There is also $15 valet parking available with a qualifying food and beverage purchase, which is useful because Fourth of July parking downtown is not so much a logistical matter as a small pagan trial. Local Baltimore Magic History
Baltimore has a lovely habit of being present when magic decides to crown itself.
In 1908, Harry Kellar passed the mantle of American magic to Howard Thurston at Fordās Theatre in Baltimore, a piece of conjuring history that still feels absurdly theatrical, as if stage magic briefly forgot it was metaphor and started acting like monarchy. The Maryland Center for History and Culture notes that Kellar placed his cape on Thurstonās shoulders during a Baltimore performance, while Baltimore Conjuring History places the moment at Fordās Grand Opera House. This is why Baltimore magic never feels like a new arrival. It feels like something that was already in the walls, waiting for better seating.

Local Folklore
The Lord Baltimore Hotel does not have to work very hard to feel haunted. Some buildings do. They install fake cobwebs and buy plastic skeletons with the grim desperation of a theme restaurant in October.
The Lord Baltimore simply stands there.
The stories tend to cluster where old hotels always collect them, elevators, upper floors, ballrooms, mirrors, hallways that seem longer at night than they did at check-in. Hotels are memory machines with housekeeping. People arrive, argue, celebrate, sleep badly, fall in love, vanish into taxis, and leave behind the emotional equivalent of lint in the corners.
By midnight, the building has opinions.
