This Weekend in Baltimore!

Baltimore Gave the World the Ouija Board. You’re Welcome.

Baltimore has contributed many useful things to civilization, including the modern railroad, the bottle cap, and the regrettable certainty that Old Bay belongs on absolutely everything. It also gave the world the Ouija board.

In 1890, Baltimore businessman Charles Kennard joined attorney Elijah Bond and several investors to form the Kennard Novelty Company. Their talking board needed a name, so Bond’s sister-in-law, medium Helen Peters, reportedly asked the board itself. The planchette spelled “Ouija,” then claimed the word meant “good luck.” This was convenient, suspicious, and excellent marketing.

The patent office was less easily impressed. According to accounts preserved by Ouija historian Robert Murch, an official demanded that the board spell his name before approving the patent. Peters and Bond placed their hands on the planchette, and the board produced the correct answer. Whether the spirits knew the official or Bond had done his homework remains one of those delightful historical problems that refuses to sit down and behave.

The patent was granted on February 10, 1891. By the following year, the company had expanded from one Baltimore factory to seven factories in America and England. William Fuld eventually took control of production, building the Ouija into one of the most recognizable occult objects in the world. It was sold as both a supernatural oracle and family entertainment, because Victorians understood that contacting the dead was considerably more enjoyable when everyone could play.

The Ravens open their preseason against the Philadelphia Eagles at M&T Bank Stadium on Saturday, August 15, at 7 PM.
